Safe cycleway celebrated

A section of the walking and cycling track between Dunedin and Port Chalmers was officially opened on Saturday.

New Zealand Transport Agency senior project manager Phil Dowsett said about 100 people attended the official opening at St Leonards Yacht Club for the portion of the path from Maia to St Leonards, beside State Highway 88.

Walkers and cyclists had been using the track since mid-September and feedback had been almost entirely positive, he said.

The completed path was halfway between Dunedin and Port Chalmers and the path's construction was supported by the 2012-15 Otago regional land transport programme, Mr Dowsett said.
