A dominant team performance from the Lake Hawea cricket team was one of the highlights of the annual Hawea district's Waitangi Day sporting competition, as Town beat Country for the first time in three years.
The Lake Hawea 11's win at Peter Fraser Park yesterday afternoon avenged a previous loss to the Hawea Flat team, and was one of five sporting results where Town defeated their Country counterparts.
Lake Hawea "town" teams also won the bowls, petanque, golf, and netball, while the Hawea Flat country outfit claimed line honours in the BMX bike racing.
Hawea Flat country also won a general knowledge quiz on Friday evening.
Town teams also won the tug-of-war competitions and a fire brigade challenge to eventually outscore their country opposition by 11-5, competition convener Barbara Chinn said.
Hawea Flat was aiming for a first ever three straight victories in 2010.
The traditional Waitangi Day fixture was held yesterday to accommodate the Rippon Music Festival, which was also held on Saturday.
