Largest deficit in Canterbury

Canterbury is expected to have the largest deficit for any district health board this financial year, following the earthquakes.

In recent years, Capital and Coast DHB has had the largest predicted and actual deficit, but it is knocked into second place this year, with Canterbury predicting a deficit about $5 million higher at $25 million.

Southern District Health Board, which improved its position last year to finish with the eighth highest deficit, is expected to return the third highest deficit at $10,491,000.

Its revenue is expected to be about $814 million.

Nelson-Marlborough is the only one of the five South Island boards expected to record a surplus - a modest $110,000.

The deficits expected in each of the four regions increase the further south boards are.

Northern and Midland regions, where nine DHBs are located, are recording surpluses overall.

In the Central region, which covers six DHBs including Capital and Coast, the total deficit is expected to be $26,314, while in the Southern Region the total is $40,382,000.

This year 12 of the 20 boards expect to break even or finish in the black.

The results for last year showed 11 boards finished with a surplus, shaving more than $50 million off the expected deficits, finishing with a total deficit of $20.08 million.

This year the overall deficit is expected to be $55.010 million.

The figures supplied by the Ministry of Health on the deficits did not include the revenue allocated to each DHB.
