Disc frisbee supporters say their sport is a fun, social and
inexpensive, but others say it is too active to be played at
Lismore Park, which would be made unsafe by flying missiles.
Queenstown Lakes District Council has received 65 submissions
on the issue, and a summary was released last Friday.
Seven submissions oppose the proposal, led by the Wanaka
Residents Association.
Association spokesman Graham Dickson, said the park should be
used for relaxing, rather than organised sport.
He said the discs would be like missiles at speed and unseen
because of the park's contours.
The 58 submissions in support described the fun families and
teenagers could have playing frisbee in a location close to
schools and the town.
They argued Lismore Park was under-used and the players would
become stewards of the reserve, helping protect it from
vandalism.
The supporters said the sport was safe, spotters could be
used to warn walkers, and they referred to successful shared
use of parks by other frisbee groups in Queenstown and in the
United States and Canada.
A hearing panel has been appointed to consider the proposal.
A date has not been set yet.
The panel comprises Cr Jude Battson and Wanaka Community
Board members Ken Copland and Mike O'Connor.
