A group of 14 Teviot Valley nurses gathered at the
Roxburgh Medical Centre yesterday to mark the contribution of
nurses in the community.
The nurses met for for afternoon tea. Among them were
Roxburgh women Nancy Craig (who nursed for 40 years) and
Michelle Shortall (who graduated last year).
Mrs Craig started her nursing career in Scotland and
continued it in Roxburgh, retiring 20 years ago. Ms Shortall
began work a month ago as a district nurse.
The group included practice, district, Karitane, hospital and
psychiatric nurses. Their experience ranged from 40-50 years
in nursing to recent graduates just starting out.
Robyn Pannett, of the Roxburgh Medical Centre, organised the
celebration.
"The staff of the medical centre were talking about it on
International Nurses Day [May 12] and said wouldn't it be
good to hold an afternoon tea and bring together all the
nurses in the Teviot Valley, retired and working.
We thought there would be quite a few." The women brought
along photographs and certificates, compared badges and
traded stories about their careers.
