The Lake Dunstan foreshore at Cromwell received a face-lift
over the weekend, just in time for spring picnics.

Calvert said more than 100 people turned up on Saturday to
help clear rubbish and weeds from the lakefront,
concentrating on the area between Old Cromwell and Deadman's
Point bridge on State Highway 8B.
"One of the really wonderful things is that everyone was
really happy to be there.
"We officially took 50 big trailer-loads to the dump but I
think there was at least half that many again ... They
couldn't take any more noxious weeds."
She said a lot of rubbish "like glass bottles and cans" plus
"a lot of gorse, broom and briar" needed to be cleared.
Four years ago, the trust developed a community plan which
listed the lakefront and keeping it tidy as an "action
point". Earlier this year, at a meeting to welcome new
residents, the trust was approached by Scott Sinclair, of
Westpac, who wanted a community project to get involved with.
Westpac local business manager Paul Keegan, of Alexandra,
said helping and promoting the clean-up of beaches and
lake-fronts was something the bank did nationally every year.
Westpac staff from Alexandra and Wanaka helped with the
Cromwell clean-up.
Ms Calvert said the other groups involved were the Cromwell
Lions, Rotary, Old Cromwell Town Committee, Tourism Cromwell,
the Hut Youth Centre, the Cromwell army reserves and people
serving community work sentences.
"Before we left we saw someone paddling in an area we had
just cleared. That was gratification, right there."
