One person is dead and five are injured following a serious crash between a grey sedan and a courier van at Cromwell.

The crash happened at the intersection of State Highway 8b and SH6, near Nichols Garden Centre, at 5.45pm.

Constable Dean Schroder, of Cromwell, said five people were in the car.

The male driver was killed, and a front seat male passenger was taken to Dunstan Hospital with moderate injuries.

Three women in the back seat were flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.

The sole occupant of the courier van, a woman, received only minor injuries in the crash, and she was not taken to hospital.

A reporter at the scene says one car has had its roof completely removed and more than 15 emergency services workers are at the scene, including several fire engines, ambulances and a helicopter.
