Hope tourists take to trails

Central Otago cycle trails will be marketed to international tourism operators next week in the hope of establishing the region as New Zealand's premier cycle tourism destination.

The Trenz conference, which is to be held in Queenstown, is the New Zealand tourism industry's biggest international trade event and members of Tourism Central Otago (TCO) will be present to promote the region's cycle trails.

TCO tourism product development manager Michelle Kinney said it was about targeting marketing to the wider cycling fraternity and developing a database of interested parties.

She said the strength of a Central Otago cycling campaign was the special moments the region offered.

"Central Otago is about the experience - the opportunity to tap into the inherently social nature of 'slow' cycling. We are developing packages around these 'slow' experiences that combine experiencing our wine and food, culture and heritage, and family summer camping opportunities.

"We are really excited that the region is going to have two new cycleways join our network with the Clutha Gold and Roxburgh Gorge trails in the construction stage. The Otago Central Rail Trail is iconic but people are also interested in our other existing tracks and trails,"
