Man charged after chase

The police pursuit of a motorist from Roxburgh to Clyde early on Saturday resulted in the arrest of a 21-year-old Tapanui man.

Sergeant Derek Ealson, of Alexandra, said the man had been remanded in custody and would appear in the Invercargill District Court tomorrow to face charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, drink-driving, breaching bail and failing to stop for police.

The incident happened at 2am.

Sgt Ealson said a member of the public alerted police, concerned about the man's driving.

Two police vehicles were involved. One pursued the vehicle driven by the man, and the other was used as a road block at the end of the one-way Clyde bridge, to stop the vehicle.

The man was driving a Toyota Hilux and there were two passengers in the vehicle.

There were concerns about the man's driving behaviour and the speed of the vehicle, Sgt Ealson said.

Police are warning Lauder residents to make sure sheds and vehicles are locked, after a report of a prowler in the area on Saturday night.

Senior Constable Brett Pay said a woman had contacted police after hearing a prowler around her home. Dogs on the property had alerted the woman.

Nothing appeared to have been taken, he said.
