Vehicle theft prompts further warning

Police in Cromwell are again reminding people to lock their vehicles, particularly commercial vehicles, as a spate of thefts continues.

About 11.30pm on Sunday a Toyota Hilux was taken from a Jollys Rd address. Sergeant Simon Paget said it was a work vehicle, parked in a driveway, with the keys in it.

The complainant chased the thieves, thought to be two males, who crashed the vehicle into a tree in the pine plantation off Gair Ave and ran off. The vehicle was not badly damaged.

He said the theft had similarities to two vehicle thefts in June and one in July and it was thought the offenders were ''joyriding''.

About 100km had been travelled in one vehicle.

In another case, two firearms were taken from the vehicle and are yet to be found.
