200 swimmers celebrate reopening of 'awesome' main pool

Just in time for the school holidays, the Cromwell Swim Centre officially reopened yesterday.

The centre closed on June 15 and partially reopened a month later but the main pool, the 25m lap pool, remained closed so it could be tiled.

It took almost 16,000 tiles to cover the six-lane pool.

Central Otago District Council parks and recreation manager Mat Begg said final invoices were yet to cross his desk but the price tag was about $180,000.

Swim centre team leader Angie Calder estimated 200 people had taken a dip at the pool yesterday and said it was ''just awesome to finally have it complete''.

''It's fantastic. You can just see the difference.''

Uri Lafita, of Cromwell, was at the pool yesterday and said her sons had been looking forward to the reopening for quite some time.

''It's so cool. Awesome. The kids have been waiting for a long time.''
