Record entries brought more than 350 people to Roxburgh for the Otago Southland Brass Band Competition over the weekend, organisers say.

Seven bands competed, including one from Canterbury, and there were about 150 soloists.

Competition organising committee member Alex Gordon, of Roxburgh, said the competition had gone very well, with many spectators.

The competition brought ''A-grade'' bands to the town.

''It's a big deal . . . it's a test of the band's ability to interpret the composer's thoughts on a song. Also, how many people enjoy it is a test of their ability.

''It is serious . . . After all, it is competitive, and you are playing for your team or band.''

Many of the bands attending would have used the event as a testing ground before the national competition, which was in Invercargill in July this year. Mr Gordon said being in a brass band was about the relationships.

''It's something that any age can participate in - 9 to 80-year-olds can play. Everyone is working in together in one big team, and the elders foster the younger ones. It's music and it is always stimulating.''

The competitions were a good time to meet up with old friends, as well.

Competition was held on Saturday in several venues in Roxburgh, with public performances by the bands yesterday afternoon in the town hall.
