Too long, too wide, too heavy, too badly lit, too poorly secured.

Lawrence Senior Constable Robert Wallace said he had any number of reasons to halt the progress of this two-bedroom sleep-out on State Highway 8 at Lawrence on Monday night.

He told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the 8m-by-4.1m building had just one strop holding it on to the trailer and it was ''a totally unsafe load''.

The 44-year-old Roxburgh owner of the building, who was driving the rented vehicle and trailer, said he had consulted the road code before setting out from the Waihola area with a companion and a third person in another vehicle acting as ''pilot''.

Snr Const Wallace said the pilot vehicle was not up to standard and the driver did not have a pilot vehicle licence.

A motorist called police about 9.30pm after encountering the building on a corner, where it was allegedly encroaching on to the wrong side of the road.

Snr Const Wallace said the rental company was unaware of the use being made of its vehicles.

He was still working out what charges to lay.

The building was in Lawrence, awaiting transport to Roxburgh by truck.
