Dinner for 90 at the 19th hole marks 60 years for golf club

Sixty years of bogeys, birdies, pars and eagles will be recalled at Tarras this weekend.

Although the township's golf course is just nine holes, the Tarras Golf Club plays a pivotal role in the life of this sparsely populated corner of Otago.

Tomorrow, the club celebrates its 60th year with a round of golf in the afternoon and a dinner for 90 in the evening.

The club, next to State Highway 8, the road to the Lindis Pass, has 50 active members but another 300 casual members who are mostly green fee-paying holiday-makers.

Club president Jonny Trevathan said the course was on land belonging to three high country farms - Cluden Station, Malvern Downs and Lindis Peaks - and its greens had been tended over the years by a succession of volunteers.

A couple with a 50-year association with the club who have moved to Cromwell, Doreen and Cliff Still, will be officially farewelled from the district at the dinner.

Mr Trevathan said it was hoped newly professional golfer Willie Moore, who began his career at Tarras, would also attend.
