Central Stories winter arts and crafts felting workshop participants (front from left) siblings Felix (8) and Isla (6) Morgan, of Christchurch, and workshop tutor Linda Arthur, of Alexandra, and (back from left) Central Stories arts co-ordinator Moniza Fenton, daughter Anya (8), both of Alexandra, and Kathryn Smit (11), of Clyde, show off their creations, after a session yesterday. Children at the school holiday workshop were taught felting techniques by tutor Linda Arthur, and produced felted flowers.

Felting is a process of creating a fabric, felt, by condensing fibres such as wool, and can be completed using water to assist the process.

Central Stories arts co-ordinator Moniza Fenton said the workshop allowed children to create something and take it home, and also helped keep the old tradition and technique of felting alive.

Workshops also provided an opportunity for children to meet others of their age, she said.

Further workshops held during winter for children and adults would include mosaics and decoupage.

All of the participants, who had never attempted felting before, agreed the workshop had been fun, and said the best part had been assembling the felt flowers.
