More trustees needed to help run museum

Trustees are still required to assist with managing the collections and running the Cromwell Museum.

The Cromwell Museum Trust is looking to appoint up to five trustees alongside the existing two before the trust takes over management of the museum.

Trustee Edith McKay, of Cromwell, said about 25 people attended a meeting held last week to inform the public of the trust's role, and gather interest for trustee positions.

''We thought it was quite a few, we were really surprised. We were happy with what we got.''

Despite the turnout, only two or three people had expressed interest in becoming trustees, although Mrs McKay was not concerned yet, as the trust did not take responsibility for the museum until January 1, 2015.

However, establishing the group was a priority.

''We need to have the trust up and running as soon as possible really, because there are things to be done before we actually move in and take over. We have to have it well and truly in place by January 1.''

The trust would take over management of the Cromwell Museum from the Central Otago District Council, and hoped to set up facilities such as a research room once the Cromwell i-Site, at present situated in the same building as the museum, was moved to a new building.

Mrs McKay said it was an exciting time for heritage in the region.

''Interest is growing in all things heritage. People are suddenly becoming aware of it.''

Related topics, such as genealogy, which Mrs McKay was involved in, were also experiencing surges in popularity at present, she said.

Positions on the trust were being advertised in Central Otago.

Interests such as celebrating the heritage of the Cromwell district, collaborating with other museums, creating an educational programme and managing the museum were listed as valuable for potential trustees.

Applications to join the trust close on Monday, August 4.
