Ice festival fine despite sleet

Poor weather did not put a damper on the Naseby Ice Festival held at the Maniototo Ice Rink on Saturday.

Although the forecast was not positive, about 180 people braved sleet and rain in the morning for what organisers said turned out to be a ''fantastic'' day.

Maniototo Ice Rink manager Heather Mason, of Naseby, said she was ''really pleased'' with the event.

''We were rapt because, given the conditions, it was still highly successful.''

Families from the Maniototo and as far away as Dunedin attended the festival, and took part in activities such as ice skating and luging.

As well as children dressing up for the occasion, a raffle was conducted and a barbecue provided hot food for the participants.

''There were a lot of younger children there. The kids just having a ball made it special,'' Mrs Mason said.

Funds raised though entry fees went towards the volunteer-operated ice rink.
