Track likely to reopen

The Millennium Track beside the Clutha River near Beaumont is expected to reopen this afternoon after landslips blocked it, but it could be at risk of further closures.

About 50m of the 9.7km track between Beaumont and Millers Flat was covered in clay and soil after the slips last Friday afternoon.

Central Otago District Council roading engineer Scott Graham said he hoped the road would reopen later today, or tomorrow.

''It's a real soupy mess at the moment. Up high [above the road] there's been some slips and they are looking quite active, and they may get triggered again in the next rain.''

The slips were probably caused by ground saturation after rain.

''One looked like an historic slip ... It's been quite a wet tail end to winter,'' Mr Graham said.

No properties had been affected by the slips.

While slip spoil had crossed the road on to the cycle trail which ran alongside, cyclists could still use the trails.
