Fundraisers feature WW1-era songs

Century-old music will ring out in Central Otago community halls this weekend.

The Ophir, Clyde and Earnscleugh Halls will be filled with the sound of World War 1-era songs as people join a Clyde singing group in a bid to raise money for the halls.

Promote Dunstan secretary Louise Joyce said the idea sprang from the 2012 Gold 150 celebrations interactive music event.

''We thought this year, as it was the World War 1 commemorations, let's do one using songs from the First World War.''

However, the events would be more than sing-alongs, as local musicians would take part. Songs will include Pack up your Troubles and It's a Long Way to Tipperary.

Beginning at the Ophir Hall tonight at 7.30pm, the event will then move to the Clyde Hall at 7.30 tomorrow evening, with the final show in the Earnscleugh Hall at 2.30pm on Sunday.

Entry is by gold coin donation, with proceeds used to fund maintenance of the halls.
