New name for planned trail

The trust behind the proposed Cromwell Gorge Cycle Trail will meet for the first time next week - and change the trail's name.

Trust member Jacqui Rule said the group, which included secretary Janeen Wood, had spent two months finding three more trustees.

The trustees' names would be revealed after they had met.

A new name would be considered for the trust and trail at the meeting because the current name was ''quite polarising'', Mrs Rule said.

The group would consider naming the trail after Lake Dunstan, rather than Clyde or Cromwell, which are at either end of the proposed trail.

The trust would also have to be legally formed; the next step would be to seek funding.

A feasibility study released in June supported the trail and found it would cost about $5.7 million to establish.

The proposed 40km trail would wind along the western shore of Lake Dunstan opposite State Highway 8 in the Cromwell Gorge.

The study found the trail would contribute $1.4 million a year to the region's economy, and create 13 fulltime jobs within five years.

The Central Lakes Trust provided $74,000 in funding, and the Central Otago District Council expertise and advice for the feasibility study.
