Deadline for entries extended

The closing date for entries in this year's WoolOn Creative Fashion event has been extended until September 19.

The event, which will be staged in Alexandra on October 10-11, is part of the annual Blossom Festival and event manager Martin McPherson said the calibre of entries was extremely high.

''So far, we've received 48 entries, five less than last year, but we're expecting a few more, so that's why the deadline has been extended.''

Entries were from all over New Zealand, with a good number of North Island designers.

The categories are streetwear, knitwear, menswear, Young Designer, accessory and felted.

Although there was some interest this year from United Kingdom designers, that had yet to translate into entries, Mr McPherson said.

The garments will be modelled at the WoolOn evening events on October 10 and 11, with the winners announced on the Saturday night.

''They will be the usual glamorous events; tickets go on sale in early September.

We'll be showcasing some of the previous WoolOn winning garments at this year's event, along with a static display of gowns from the Eden Hore collection,'' Mr McPherson said.

The Otago Daily Times is the major sponsor of WoolOn this year.

It sponsored the early years of WoolOn and two of its former staff members, Deirdre Mackenzie and Janice Millis, were instrumental in getting the fashion event started 11 years agoWoolOn began as part of the New Zealand Merino Shears to showcase the use of wool in fashion and became part of the festival programme nine years ago.
