Man hurt in alleged axe attack in Roxburgh

A man survived an alleged axe attack in Central Otago last night.

Police were called to Scotland St, Roxburgh, following reports of an assault, about 7.30pm.

''It appears this man has hit the victim in the head with an axe,'' Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said.

The 44-year-old victim was described as the ''walking wounded'', but did not receive life-threatening injuries in the alleged attack.

The Central Otago man was taken to the Roxburgh Medical Centre for treatment.

''For a short time the offender had left the address and we were actively looking for him,'' Snr Sgt Scott said.

The alleged offender was arrested by police when he returned to the address.

The 56-year-old was taken to the Alexandra Police Station for questioning last night, and was likely to face a serious assault charge, he said.

It was unclear what sparked the alleged assault, he said.
