Police locate alleged offender after car chase

Police twice abandoned a car chase near Cromwell on Sunday night - but eventually caught up with the alleged culprit.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said a Subaru Legacy station wagon was unlawfully taken from Arrowtown at 7pm on Sunday night and later was spotted by police being driven in Cromwell.

The ensuing pursuit, towards Bannockburn, was abandoned because of the way in which the car was being driven, he said.

The car later drove over road spikes, which ripped one of the tyres, but again police were forced to abandon the pursuit before the damaged vehicle was later found in the Cromwell town centre.

An Arrowtown man (28) was arrested yesterday morning.

He will appear in the Queenstown District Court today charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, two counts of reckless driving, failing to stop and burglary.
