Trees have been removed and machinery moved in for the latest stage in the Cromwell town centre redevelopment.

Work on the northern and eastern sides, including the Barry Ave entrance, of the Cromwell Mall began on September 1, and already the row of shops behind the northern car park is more visible, after trees between the car park and Murray Tce were removed.

Cromwell Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Hucklebridge said it was great to see the next stage of the mall redevelopment under way.

''It's an exciting time for Cromwell. It is a huge project and it is progressing as per the budget. It means so much and it makes the whole town attractive,'' Mrs Hucklebridge said.

Work includes landscaping and alteration of car parks and entrances to the mall.

Cromwell Community Board chairman Neil Gillespie said the board was looking forward to the next stage of the redevelopment.

''The first stage has certainly enhanced the appearance of the northern edge and to now integrate the northern car park and Barry Avenue entrance will build on that.''

Upgrades of the northern edge of the mall were completed last year.

Present work was expected to be completed by mid-December with a further six stages of work planned to be finished by 2017.

Elsewhere in the Cromwell Mall area, work has begun on the site between the Subway building and the former Stirling Sports building, on the northwest side, where the building destined to house the Cromwell i-Site will be built.
