Judging began this week for the Senior Festival Queen contest, with the event - the first in the Alexandra Blossom Festival programme - less than a week away.

The seven contenders are (from left) Eileen Rawlings, Yvonne Latham, Shirley Wrigley, all of Alexandra, Anne Dougherty, of Clyde, Rita Perry, of Alexandra, Pat Lines, of Clyde, and Maureen McIntosh, of Alexandra.

The winner will be announced at a function at the Alexandra District Club on Monday that heralds the start of the festival activities.

The senior queen contest began 19 years ago as a way of thanking the senior women in the district who devoted countless hours to the festival and other volunteer work.

This year's senior queen judges are Paul Rillstone, Esther McKay and Joy Ramsay.

Meanwhile, early-bird tickets are on sale in Alexandra and Clyde shops for the main festival event, Saturday in the Park on September 27, which follows the procession.

The festival concludes with the WoolOn Creative Fashion event on October 11.
