More feedback on underpass sought

It is too early to speculate on the possible construction time frame for an underpass beneath State Highway 8, the Central Otago District Council says.

Its infrastructure services manager, Jon Kingsford, said more feedback on options for the underpass was needed from the community before a decision could be made on how to proceed.

On Tuesday afternoon, the council held a drop-in session at the Clyde Memorial Hall.

About 50 members of the public took up an invitation to discuss the three proposed options for the underpass with councillors and staff.

Option one, under SH8 north of Hazlett St, and option three, under SH8 from the Albert Dr laneway, received the most support from participants, Mr Kingsford said.

''There were a number of people saying let's build what we can now, and a number of people saying let's wait for some funding and what we see as the best option.''

Those present discussed with councillors and staff the ''pros and cons'' of each option but the real issue was about balancing cost versus benefit for each, he said.

While none of the options would totally prevent people from crossing SH8, they would reduce risk and provide alternatives, he said.

Although the session was ''reasonably well attended'', the council was looking for more responses.

''We are still open to receive feedback up until Monday, October 6,'' Mr Kingsford said.

Information is available on the council's website. People can respond in writing or by email, or by dropping responses off at the council office in Alexandra, the Clyde Library or the Clyde Primary School office.
