The designation of about 4300sq m of farmland beside Maori Point Rd for an Aurora Energy substation has been confirmed.
On Wednesday, a statement received by the Otago Daily Times said the Central Otago District Council hearings panel recommended the designation go ahead, subject to conditions.
Delta asset management general manager Derek Todd said he was delighted the council had reacted favourably to the proposed designation.
Delta is to manage the construction of the 66/11kV substation for Aurora Energy to provide a reliable power supply to the Tarras area, required by intensified farming.
''It is relatively urgent that we supplement infrastructure in that area to deal with [electrical] load growth, with construction planned to be completed in early 2015,'' Mr Todd said.
Earlier this month, Delta project manager Peter Cowan, on behalf of Aurora, told the hearings panel a substation had been expected to be required for the Tarras irrigation scheme.
Although that scheme had not gone ahead, other, smaller irrigation plans had driven a need for it, he said.
The council's planning consultant, David Whitney, had said the project would have economic benefits by providing necessary infrastructure to boost rural production.
At the hearing, planning consultant Tim Lester, on behalf of Aurora, said all parties potentially affected by the substation had been consulted and were in support.
Mr Todd said land required for the substation would be bought from a farmer, but he could not confirm if it had already been acquired.
