Extra police; goal zero arrests

An increased police presence will be out in Central Otago for the Blossom Festival this weekend.

Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said about 40 extra staff would be in Alexandra, working in a crime-prevention role.

''The ultimate goal is zero [arrests]. Last year we got to very low numbers - three. This year we hope to be below that.''

An alcohol ban was in place for all of Alexandra, Cromwell and Clyde until Monday, he said.

Snr Sgt Kerrisk asked people in the area for the festival to be patient with more traffic on roads and visitors in the region than usual.

''We want everyone at the end of the weekend to be going home happy.''
