Something for all Across the Bridge

Wine-tasting, rabbit pies, live music, guided scenic walks and cooking masterclasses.

People can find something to stimulate all five senses at the Across the Bridge event being held in Bannockburn this weekend.

In its third year, the event has grown from 14 events to about 22 on this year's programme, beginning this afternoon.

Event organiser Jan Hawkins, of Bannockburn, said the event was to celebrate the town's part in ''iconic Kiwi culture''.

''It's about open spaces and the friendly people and small-town New Zealand, it's about the hidden gems, wineries, artists, eating places.

''We find that even Central Otago people have not visited Bannockburn and we just wanted to show what is available ... and the number of professional artists, the walks - we are just wanting to showcase the town.''

She was happy with the interest the line-up of events had received already. The cooking master class with Masterchef contestant Bec Stanley was ''getting pretty full'', Mrs Hawkins said.

''Jimmy the weather man is the only one I'm not happy with, but most of the bad weather misses us [in Bannockburn].''

She expected the recycled fashion show, and the artists of Bannockburn exhibition at the Cairnmuir Station woolshed to draw large numbers.

New for the weekend this year were the Bannie Beanie Awards, the Run Rabbit Run wild rabbit pie competition, and the hot rods and classic car show at the Bannockburn Domain.

People looking for a family day out should head to Bannockburn on Sunday for the classic car show, the outdoor market on the corner of Bannockburn and Domain Rds, and the scarecrows made by Cromwell school pupils, at the Carrick Winery, Mrs Hawkins said.

Last year, the weekend attracted more than 400 people, and the target for 2014 was for more than 500 people attending, she said.

Entry for most events was a gold coin donation.
