Power cut by winds

Up to 400 Aurora Energy consumers across Central Otago were without power at different times yesterday morning.

A total of 109 consumers from Lake Hawea, 119 from Omakau, 120 from the Bruces Hill and Springvale areas near Alexandra, and 52 from Lindis Hill were affected.

Power losses occurred between 1am and about 11am, depending on the area.

Delta marketing and communications manager Gary Johnson said the losses were caused by high winds.

''Strong winds [blew] trees or branches on to power lines or [caused] damage to power poles.

''Always keep well clear of fallen power lines and treat all electricity lines and equipment as live at all times,'' he said.

Power to nearly all consumers had been restored by noon.
