Members of the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade line up outside their station after moving back in following six months of extensions and upgrades.

Work on the 267sq m extension included earthquake-strengthening, a new appliance bay, offices, meeting rooms, and a breathing apparatus filling centre.

The new bay allowed the brigade to house the Central Otago command unit on site.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Hutton said the brigade wanted to thank Hinton Estate Wines, in Alexandra, which housed the appliances during the work period.

The brigade moved into the refurbished station last week. Funding for the work was provided by the New Zealand Fire Service.

Mr Hutton said the upgrades provided the brigade with a ''fantastic'' facility which would allow it to operate as a centre piece in the community.

Strengthening work fitted with the idea that in the case of a major disaster or emergency, the station would be ''the last building standing''. There was still some work to be completed on the outside of the building.

An official opening, attended by national fire commanders, would be held in December, followed by an open day for the public.
