Explosions in Clyde as Transpower upgrades lines

Residents of Clyde and the surrounding district are being warned they might hear loud explosions during the day as part of the work upgrading Transpower transmission lines near the town.

The work, at Fruitgrowers Rd, involves a new technique for installing fittings, which requires explosives to be used, project manager Mark McKeogh of Electrix Ltd, said in a letter to landowners.

The noise levels would be "significant'' and there would be a blasts from a warning siren before detonating the explosives.

The work near Clyde begins today and is expected to take about three weeks.
