New i-Site plans opening soon

Cromwell's new i-Site will be staffed by three people, nine hours a day, seven days a week, until April next year, and could open before Christmas.

Team leader Helen Scoles said getting the new location, on the northern side of the Cromwell mall, facing Murray Tce, was the end of a nine-year process.

''We are very excited ... we are finally here, and we hope the wider Cromwell community will benefit from our exposure. We will be easier to find for the passing public.''

Central Otago District Council community services manager Anne Pullar said a pre-Christmas opening was planned, but it depended on getting a phone line installed.

This week the council took over the fit-out of the building, which is next to Subway.

Ms Pullar said the centre would showcase Central Otago and the wider region.

She said it would provide ''a lot'' more opportunities for commercial operators than the previous one.

The present i-Site, located in the mall in the same building as the Cromwell and Districts Museum, would remain open and provide full services until the day before the new i-Site opened.

Longer summer hours, from 9am-7pm would be in place until April.
