It was perhaps ironic that it rained during the official opening of Alexandra's improved fire station last night. Fittingly, the brigade had to attend a fire earlier in the day.

About 100 people attended the opening, including New Zealand Fire Service National Commander Paul Baxter, two former chief station officers, Central Otago Mayor Tony Lepper and almost all of the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade members and their families.

Commander Baxter made a speech to the assembled crowd, explaining the importance of the brigade, which attended between 110 and 130 callouts a year and he relayed some of its history.

The cost ''topped $1 million'', but that was a worthwhile investment, he said.

Work on the 267sq m extension took about six months, and included earthquake-strengthening, a new appliance bay, breathing apparatus filling facilities, a room for protective equipment, and offices.

The new bay allowed the brigade to house the Central Otago command unit on site.

Chief Fire Officer Russell Anderson said the building was ''just fabulous'' and the service was privileged to have such a quality facility.

An open day will be held at the station tomorrow from 1-4pm, so people can see the improvements and fire appliances themselves.

Fire safety activities for children will be available, and smoke alarms will be on sale.
