There were many hugs shared, along with tears, as Cromwell College opened yesterday for pupils gathering to mourn the loss of the school's head girl.

A classroom will be open again today from 9am-4pm and a counsellor and staff on hand to support the wider school community, who were ''devastated'' at the sudden death of 17-year-old Rachel Clark, principal Mason Stretch said.

Rachel's death at her home on Saturday was believed to be caused by a medical event, a St John spokesman said at the weekend, and the matter has now been referred to the coroner.

The popular teenager was described as an all-rounder, a sportswoman as well as a high achiever academically, and Mr Stretch said the word most often used about her yesterday was ''inspirational''.

''She was a charismatic person, someone who made a difference, and the messages we've received since her death and the comments we've heard about her a real testament to her character and the impact she had on so many other lives,'' he said.

A steady stream of pupils and others with links to the school had called in to the college yesterday, Mr Stretch said.

''They've dropped in, stayed as long as they wanted, had a chat and shared their emotions ... There's been a lot of hugs.

''Opening the school up gives them somewhere to go and spend time with others to share their feelings ... It's a difficult time of the year, too, with Christmas close by.''

He had received emails and messages of support from people all over Otago.

''She was loved by so many people and her loss has been huge for Cromwell.''
