Each year, a dedicated group of volunteers wakes early on Christmas Day, heads to the Alexandra Bowling Club, and gets to work in the kitchen.

The Alexandra Community Christmas Dinner Trust and volunteers have taken upon themselves to spread Christmas cheer and hold a dinner for those who are alone and who do not have family nearby, in order to celebrate the day together.

Trustee Alistair Ross, of Alexandra, who has been helping out with the event for about six years, said the day attracted a cross-section of the community and different nationalities.

''The whole idea is for anybody who is by themselves, orchard workers from overseas ... to come and enjoy the day with us.''

About 100 people attended yesterday's dinnerThe trust began organising the dinner about a month ago, receiving food donations from businesses and groups in Alexandra.

Orchards and vineyards provided fresh fruit and wine.

Any left-over food from the meal would be given to rest-homes in the area and the Salvation Army, Mr Ross said.
