Big-event athletes to feature at awards

The latest Central Otago sports awards are expected to feature athletes who competed at major international events last year.

Competitors from the region attended events such as the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 and are likely to be nominated for the awards.

The awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 22, at The Venue, in Wanaka.

Nominations are open for the awards from the 2014 sporting year, and co-ordinator Bill Godsall urged minority sports to enter.

Even if they did not win, the awards would still provide exposure for their sport and recognition for athletes, coaches and administrators.

Categories included senior sportsman and sportswoman, junior sportsman and woman, team and coach, and a services to sports award selected by judges.

There is also a junior roll of honour.

Category winners vie for the supreme award.

Nominations close on March 27, with forms available from Sport Central.
