Jones Halstead Bagrie was too busy to talk to the Otago Daily Times yesterday. Which is fair, considering he was attending a concert in his name and had to catch up with friends he had not seen in four months.

Jones and his mother, Sue Halstead, returned to Alexandra for the weekend from Christchurch, where Jones is being treated for a rare form of cancer.

Doctors allowed him to leave hospital to attend the concert at the old swimming pool reserve in Alexandra, where more than 150 people gathered to hear Alexandra band , the Junction.

Band member and organiser Shane Gilchrist said more than $1400 was raised during the concert which was ''definitely'' a success.

''It's pretty amazing. Jones was there running round with all his mates. That was as good as anything else.''

Funds gathered during the concert would go towards supporting Ms Halstead and her family as she had to close her business to move to Christchurch with her daughter, Briar (8), to support Jones.

Ms Halstead said she was amazed and humbled by the turnout.

''It's just so lovely to be around family and friends. [Jones] is loving it. I have not seen him so excited for a long time.

''It's unbelievable.''

She wanted to thank people for their efforts and for attending, but did not want to leave anyone out.

''Thanks to the band for the idea and for organising it and the wider Alexandra community, because everybody has been supportive of Jones and I while we have been away.''

The trip back to Alexandra was a chance to ''recharge'' after Jones had been admitted to hospital in December.

Jones has to return to hospital in Christchurch soon for four weeks of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
