2000 visitors to museum

Since the Cromwell Museum entered management by a trust at the beginning of January, more than 2000 people have visited.

Although visitor records were not kept in the past, the team that now runs the museum is pleased with the result, after not knowing what to expect.

The museum, previously run by the Central Otago District Council, entered management by the Cromwell Museum Trust after the town's i-Site moved from a shared building in the Cromwell Mall to a new location on the northern edge of the mall.

Trust chairwoman Edith McKay, of Cromwell, said since taking over on January 5, the group had been ''very happy''.

Obtaining grants for funding was a work in progress for the museum, which offered entry by donation, but the trust was ''managing to balance the budget''.

Long-term plans were in the works, with a research room a certainty, she said.

Work was being carried out on some displays including a World War 1 display to be ready before Anzac day.

The trust was still looking for volunteers to help run the museum, she said.

Cromwell Museum is open from 10am-4pm daily, with the exception of some public holidays.
