Eyeing community development grant

A grassroots movement might be established soon in Teviot Valley.

Today the Teviot Valley Community Board will discuss whether to support an application on its behalf for a $240,000 community development grant.

A report compiled by Central Otago District Council community development manager, Paula Penno, said the grant would allow a community worker to be employed for three years to help with ''grassroots'' projects in the Teviot Valley.

Her report said new cycleways, seasonal fruit pickers and holiday workers and future enhancement of broadband in the region all provided opportunities for community projects.

At the end of the three-year period, projects created as a result of the role would be ''business as usual'' for the community.

The fund would be managed by a working group of key community and stakeholder groups within the Teviot Valley.

The group would also help with project ideas.

The grant would be from a community development scheme created by the Department of Internal Affairs to encourage communities to address issues locally.

Until recently, selected communities were eligible on a rotation system, but changes to the criteria mean applications will be accepted nationwide.
