Work on the State Highway 8 underpass at Clyde has finally begun, with one side of the approach being dug out.

The $500,000 project began earlier this week on the Springvale side of the highway. Central Otago District Council roading manager Scott Graham said the start of work was a real relief for the community.

Residents presented the council with 723 signatures supporting the project.

The underpass will allow anyone using the Otago Central Rail Trail to safely cross the state highway to reach Clyde township.

By yesterday morning, contractors had removed material from one approach to the underpass and digging up the road section will be next.

The highway will be closed from 8am on Monday until 5pm on Friday while that is being done.

Detours will be available on Young Lane and Springvale Rd if heading to and from Cromwell or north Clyde, and on Muttontown Rd for south Clyde.
