Lake's next weed-control round taking place soon

Lake Dunstan is set to get a weed-control boost soon.

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she had raised concerns with the Land Information Minister about getting the lake weed lagarosiphon under control as soon as possible.

The lake had been in the spotlight recently with boaties raising safety issues about the weed in popular recreational areas.

Mrs Dean has been told the next aerial spraying could be done as soon as next month.

''I'm pleased to hear that this control work will begin shortly because I want the lake weed problem brought under control quickly so that locals and visitors can continue to enjoy the lake,'' she said.

Although aerial herbicide remained the most effective method of controlling the weed, Land Information New Zealand was reviewing its approach to see if there was anything else that could be done.

Several areas, such as Butcher's Dr boat ramp and in front of Old Cromwell town, could not be treated in recent spraying and have been given priority for the next round.
