Young Driver of the Year participants Ethan Pugh (17, front left) and Lenny Stiles (17, front right) are taught by Pete Scott from Tyreland Alexandra how to put chains on tyres, as Steven Hansen from the Central Otago Motorsport Club marks their efforts.

The programme, held at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, was the only one of its kind in the country, Central Otago District Council community road safety adviser Jo Robinson said.

It was sponsored and run by residents to support drivers in Central Otago aged between 16 and 25, she said. Skills gained by participants included traction control, ABS braking, precision driving skills and changing tyres, as well as learning about local statistics, alcohol harm and brain injuries.

''It's all about teaching them any kind of driving skill that will help them out on the road.''

Split into two days, the programme will finish this Sunday with a prizegiving at which one participant will be named Young Driver of the Year.
