Charges considered

Police are considering laying charges in connection with a duck-shooting accident near Paerau in which a man received gunshot injuries to his arm.

Police are still investigating the incident, which happened nearly a fortnight ago, on the opening day of the duck-shooting season.

A 24-year-old Maniototo man was taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter on Saturday, May 2, after receiving ''a large entry and exit wound to his arm'', a St John spokeswoman said at the time.

Police said the man was in an all-terrain vehicle with four others when he fell out with two guns.

One of the shotguns discharged and struck the man in the arm.

Asked about the investigation yesterday, Detective Alan Lee, of Alexandra, said charges were being considered ''focused on the entire circumstances and the use/presence of firearms.''

As with any incident, police were investigating whether alcohol was a factor.

The injured man was discharged from hospital last week.
