Fire seen as 'suspicious'

The cause of an Alexandra fire which gutted a car and threatened a nearby house is being treated as suspicious.

Constable Sam Williams said the late 1980s Mitsubishi Diamante car was parked in the drive of a Gregg St home, within 1.5m to 2m of the building.

''It was just lucky enough that the owners noticed the car was on fire ... Potentially, the house could've burnt as well and as it was, an outside light on the house was melted and the ranch slider doors were damaged,'' he said.

The Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the fire about 9.43pm on Sunday . The car owners had tried to put the fire out but it rapidly took hold, Const Williams said.

''There's the potential for major damage in a car fire. They contain all sorts of products that will burn and once it's all on fire, the smoke is quite toxic.''

The fire was being treated as suspicious, Const Williams said. He declined to say why.

Police want to hear from anyone with information about the incident.

Members of the public can contact Constable Sam Williams at the Alexandra Police Station or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
