Film workshops funded

Young people will get the chance to explore sustainability through film-making in Alexandra next month, thanks to the Central Lakes Trust.

The Connected Media Charitable Trust was recently awarded $4000 by the trust to hold one-day film-making workshops in Alexandra and Wanaka.

Trust project manager Chris Widdup said schoolchildren aged 11 to 18 are invited to the free session where they will discuss sustainability issues, and from that discussion pitch an idea to their group and shoot and edit a short film.

''It's a fast-paced and exciting workshop,'' he said.

Five groups will make a short film each of one to two minutes and will show them at the end of the day.

Mr Widdup said they had been holding sessions in Wanaka since 2012, as well as throughout the country, but never held one in Alexandra before but the grant ''allows us to do that''.

''Often, we have had people come over from Alexandra to Wanaka. We figured it would be a good thing to do,'' he said.

They started the workshops five years ago to explore the concept of sustainability with young people and ''help young filmmakers take it as far as they could'', he said.

The Alexandra workshop will be held at Alexandra Community House on August 11 from 9.30am to 4.30pm, and August 12 at the Lake Wanaka Centre.

The workshops were ''low tech'' and students were encouraged to bring phones, cameras and laptops.

As well as schoolchildren, youth workers and school teachers were encouraged to attend.

It was hoped each student would go away with a sustainability idea for a film that could be entered into the media trust's Outlook for Someday film challenge in September.

The Central Lakes Trust also approved $28,600 for the Alexandra Community Wheelchair Van Group to purchase a replacement wheelchair-accessible van.

Clyde Bowling Club will now have a defibrillator installed in the clubrooms after it received a grant of $1644 to help purchase one.

Alexandra's Musical Society's production of Evita has received a grant of $15,000, and the trust also confirmed up to 50 scholarships would be awarded to year 13 high school pupils who plan to start full-time study at a tertiary institution in 2016.

Central Lakes Regional Youth Trust was approved an operational grant of $15,000.
