'Top paddock' most important

Farmers are getting a helping hand to maintain the ''top paddock'' in Ranfurly next week.

A free community day is being held at Maniototo Park Stadium and Rugby Clubrooms for farmers across Central Otago to come together and learn a new approach to wellbeing and living well.

Mental Health Foundation senior communications officer Sophia Graham said the programme, called Farmstrong, was focused on the wellbeing of farmers and looking after the most important paddock, the ''top paddock''.

It was about ''making sure farmers have the skills and support structures in place,'' she said.

Dr Tom Mulholland will give a presentation on ''healthy thinking'' and what farmers can do to look after themselves.

Ms Graham said one aspect of his presentation would look at how people responded to different situations in life, changing the way they thought about the situation and turning it into a learning opportunity.

Depression and suicide were not taboo subjects in the rural sector but ''I think that as a nation we could all do better'' and be willing to talk to each other about it and listening without judgement, she said.

The programme was established by Farmers Mutual Group and the Mental Health Foundation.

The day would be ''very interactive'', with opportunities to ask questions and guest speakers.

Soup, scones, tea and coffee would be provided free of charge.

Farmstrong spokesperson Gerard Vaughan said connecting with others was really important.

''When the challenges come along, you're better prepared. We certainly hope to see you there,'' he said.
