Bridges project a winner

McConnell Dowell Constructors has won a top award for excellence in civil construction for its work on the Waitaki Bridges Replacement project.

It received the accolade at the Civil Contractors New Zealand conference this monthThe $20.1million SH82 Waitaki Bridges Replacement project involved the design and construction of two new bridges, one 206m long and the other 92m.

The bridges span the Waitaki River, which forms the boundary between Otago and Canterbury, the new bridges guaranteeing access between the two provinces which had become uncertain as the old 132-year-old structures closed more frequently for floods or repairs.

The south bridge was officially opened in April last year, the longer north bridge in June.

As well as the SH82 Waitaki Bridges Replacement project award, McConnell Dowell tunnel construction manager Chris Ashton won the Civil Contractors New Zealand's Z Energy Award for Emerging Leader 2015.
