The top storey of a Clyde home was gutted by a fire fanned by high winds this morning.

The three occupants of the two-storey Fache St house - three generations of one family - all escaped safely.

Clyde, Cromwell and Alexandra firefighters attended the blaze and officer in charge, Matt Murphy, of the Clyde Volunteer Fire Brigade, said the cause was still being investigated.

"Within about five minutes, the whole top half of the building was well-involved," he said.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire from downstairs and from outside the building.

St John Ambulance staff treated one of the home's occupants, an elderly woman, at the scene for smoke inhalation. She did not have to be admitted to hospital.

Victim Support volunteers were with the family.
