A kleptomaniac magpie could be responsible for hiding an expensive watch up a tree in Cromwell.

A Cromwell family found the watch earlier this week after watching a magpie fly away from the tree and seeing something metal left behind, a statement from Cromwell police said.

As family members got closer, the watch, a model costing about $13,000 to $14,000, was found dangling in the tree.

The family brought the watch to the Cromwell Police Station and explained how they found it.

Cromwell police wondered if the magpie had anything to do with the unusual find or if the family had ''stumbled across the one tree that does grow cash''.

They would like to hear from anyone who is missing a watch like the one in the photo.
